Guest Checkout vs Customer Accounts: What Performs Better?

Guest Checkout vs Customer Accounts

Ecommerce is constantly on the verge of new advancements. All of that is made possible by the customer data that is made available to ecommerce vendors through customer subscription. This is making subscription processes more valuable than ever. As a result, ecommerce vendors are constantly looking for subscriptions and are willing to force the customers to register at checkouts.

In ecommerce, checkouts are without any doubt the most important part of a customer ́s journey. This is where vendors can either seal the deal or lose the customer, probably forever.

Most ecommerce vendors hire professional Shopify developer and BigCommerce developer to develop a fast and interactive website with frictionless checkout as far as design is concerned but they pay a little heed to one of the main factors, registration process

Ecommerce experts have introduced two methods of checkout, guests check out and customer check out. Both come with pros and cons depending on the situation. When it comes to subscriptions and checkouts, there is no right and wrong in ecommerce. Every situation and every mode has its importance.

Guest account:

Guest checkout or account is when you allow a unanimous customer to make a purchase without registering to your website. This process is valuable for new customers that are just going to buy from you once. One of the main reasons why shoppers prefer ecommerce is the ease and comfort of buying. A lengthy and boring registration process hinders their comfort resulting in cart abandonment. According to a study more than 30% of customers abandon a cart as a result of boring and unnecessary registration process. Guest checkouts are the perfect solution for these kinds of customers that are looking for a swift purchase with no strings attached.

Moreover online customer`s confidence have gone rapidly down as a result of ever increasing cyber thefts leaving customers empty handed. First time shoppers feel uncomfortable while sharing their personal and credential information with new website every time they want to buy something online. Guest checkouts allow them to make a purchase without any of these restrictions.

Like everything else in the world guest account have their shortcomings as well. If we look at the other side of the coin, it will be evident that this side is more devastating for the online retailers as compared to the customers. If a customer checkouts as a guest, he would have to enter all of the information every time they come back to make a purchase. But for a retailer, he is deprived of probably the most valuable thing in the modern world, I.e. Data. Without proper data ecommerce business owners can not device an effective marketing strategy. The information provided in the guest account is only valuable for the shipping and billing purposes, not for proper marketing. As a result, online retailers are willing to force their customers in search of future sales, but that is not the most preferable or professional way of doing so, there are many other ways to get a customer to come back like good design and excellent customer service.

Customer accounts:

Customer accounts or checkouts are a win win situation for both the retailers and customers. Customer account is when a customer decides to register with the website for future prospects. Customers that register provide their personal information along with their credentials and allow the website to save their data and use it for marketing purposes. That is not the extent of the benefits that come with customer accounts as it gives the customer the opportunity to make a purchase by just logging in to their account and making a purchase with minimum clicks. Ecommerce giants like Amazon offer one click purchase on the basis of the customer data that is already stored in their database. This is being adopted by the majority of ecommerce businesses forming a universal rule that minimum clicks mean maximum conversion. The less time a customer spends on the checkout the more chances you have of getting a conversion.

Having a customer account benefits the customer in return and customer service. When vendors have a detailed information of what the customer’s preferences are, they can provide a better customer support and service. These activities lay the foundation to achieve the holy grail of ecommerce I.e. customer loyalty. Some companies even offer loyalty programs to their customers account holders. These include letting their customers buy new products before they are launched in the market.

One main drawback of customer account or checkout is account fatigue. Customers find is difficult to remember the account details of different account and end up abandoning the cart. Moreover, the process of asking a customer to fill in a lengthy form to make a purchase can be exhausting. But both of these drawbacks are nothing compared to the benefits.

What is best for your business?

Like I said before, that in ecommerce nothing is right and wrong especially when it comes to checkouts. Both come with merits and demerits depending upon the situation. The best approach is to offer three options at the checkout, guest checkout, login, customer account. This way you eliminate the forcing factor and there is always an opportunity that the customer registers based on the quality of services and compensation offered.
